In a candid revelation, actress Kaley Cuoco has robustly defended her and fiancé Tom Pelphrey's decision to stop sharing a bed, describing the unconventional sleeping arrangement as a profound "game changer" that has made them "much happier people." The Big Bang Theory alum, 40, detailed the rationale behind this choice during a recent episode of Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, highlighting how divergent sleep patterns and their rescue dogs' nocturnal habits necessitated the shift.
Divergent Schedules and Canine Companions Prompt Change
Cuoco explained that the couple's sleeping quarters became untenable due to Pelphrey's status as a dedicated "night owl" who writes and reads late into the evening, contrasted sharply with her own early-to-bed, early-to-rise routine. This fundamental mismatch was exacerbated by the presence of their rescue dogs in the bedroom, whose barking persistently disrupted Pelphrey's rest. "He was like, 'I can't do this anymore.' And I'm like, 'I understand,'" Cuoco recounted, noting that Pelphrey consequently began sleeping in the guest room.
Initial Concerns and Therapeutic Support
The actor admitted to initial reservations about societal perceptions, questioning, "What will people think?" However, Pelphrey's pragmatic observation that they rarely interacted at night—"I never see you at night. We don't cuddle. We don't see each other at night"—prompted a reassessment. Cuoco recalled, "He goes, 'Why do you care?' And I sat there, and I went, 'God, I don't care.'" The couple, who engage in regular couples therapy, collaboratively decided to trial the separation, with Cuoco emphasising that "nothing happens but sleep" in the guest room, thereby preserving intimacy elsewhere.
Enhanced Family Dynamics and Personal Wellbeing
Since implementing the change, Cuoco reported significant improvements in daily life, particularly regarding their two-year-old daughter, Matilda. Previously, she would "tiptoe" around the bedroom with Matilda to avoid waking Pelphrey, who struggled to return to sleep. Now, with Pelphrey resting undisturbed, Cuoco can enjoy morning routines with Matilda at 7 a.m. without constraint. "I'm up with Matilda at 7 a.m. She comes into bed with me. I can turn things on," she shared, declaring it the "best decision we ever made."
The Rising Trend of 'Sleep Divorce'
Cuoco and Pelphrey's experience aligns with a growing cultural phenomenon termed "sleep divorce," where partners opt for separate sleeping spaces to enhance rest quality. Research underscores this trend's popularity:
- A study for Hilton's 2025 Trends report found that 63% of individuals sleep better when alone in bed.
- The same report noted 37% of travellers prefer separate beds on vacation, especially when accompanied by children.
- A 2023 American Academy of Sleep Medicine online survey revealed over one-third of Americans practice sleep divorce, indicating widespread adoption.
Cuoco and Pelphrey, who began dating in 2022, announced their relationship on Instagram in May that year, welcomed Matilda in 2023, and became engaged in 2024. Their story illustrates how prioritising practical sleep needs over traditional norms can foster greater relationship satisfaction and personal wellbeing, challenging conventional expectations about co-sleeping in modern partnerships.
