In a striking display of diplomatic provocation, Iranian embassies in Bulgaria and Tajikistan publicly mocked former US President Donald Trump with memes referencing the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, mere minutes after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire deal between the United States and Iran.
Timing of the Mockery
The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening, shortly after Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the two nations had reached a temporary ceasefire agreement. This announcement came less than two hours before a chilling deadline set by Trump, where he had warned that failure to strike a deal would result in the ominous threat that "a whole civilization will die." The deal was indicated to lead to the reopening of the strategically vital Hormuz Strait.
Immediate Online Reaction
Almost instantly following the ceasefire announcement, Trump faced widespread mockery online, with critics accusing him of "TACOing"—a term meaning "Trump Always Chickens Out"—on his previous threats to devastate Iran. This online ridicule was swiftly amplified by official Iranian diplomatic channels.
Embassy Posts on Social Media
The Iranian Embassy in Tajikistan took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an Epstein-themed meme with the caption: "I am trying to hide myself Thank you DONALD J.TRUMP." Similarly, the Iranian Embassy in Bulgaria posted a meme depicting top US officials, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, State Secretary Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, and President Trump, all praying around Jeffrey Epstein, who is shown sitting in the Oval Office chair. The accompanying text read: "Pray to Epstein!"
Context of the Conflict
This ceasefire follows more than a month of heightened tensions, initiated by Operation Epic Fury—a joint US-Israeli military campaign launched against Iran on February 28. The operation led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint, and triggered a subsequent spike in petrol prices worldwide.
Allegations of Distraction
The embassy posts explicitly suggested that the war was orchestrated to divert public attention from the Epstein files. In the weeks preceding the conflict, millions of documents linked to the deceased sex offender were disclosed by the US Department of Justice, implicating numerous high-profile figures globally. Several European leaders have since resigned or been arrested after being named in these files.
Trump's Denials and Official Stance
Trump has consistently denied any misconduct related to the Epstein case. He has not been implicated in any crimes by law enforcement and has never been identified as the subject of any formal investigation. Despite this, in the aftermath of the US-Israeli strikes, some experts and world leaders speculated that the military action was intended to shift focus away from the unsettling global network of elites exposed through the Epstein revelations.
US officials, however, have maintained that their military objectives in Iran are solely focused on dismantling the regime and preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons, dismissing claims of distraction as baseless.
