Anne Hathaway Unveils Taylor Swift's 'Magical' Role in Shaping Her New Film Mother Mary
In a candid television appearance, actress Anne Hathaway has opened up about the profound influence Taylor Swift exerted over her upcoming psychological thriller, Mother Mary. The 43-year-old star, who is concurrently promoting the sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, shared these insights during a segment on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this Wednesday.
Swift as an 'Angel' Over the Production
When host Stephen Colbert questioned Hathaway about Swift's impact, following a clip showcasing Hathaway performing a pop song in the film, the actress provided a heartfelt response. "I mean, she was kind of like an angel that I felt like was over our heads all the time," Hathaway revealed, emphasizing the singer's pervasive presence during the movie's creation.
She elaborated that director David Lowry, a dedicated admirer of the Grammy-winning artist, drew direct inspiration from Swift's Reputation tour for the film's aesthetic and narrative elements. Additionally, Hathaway cited Swift's tour documentary Miss Americana as a key influence, particularly appreciating "how vulnerable she just let herself be."
Empathy and a Personal Connection
Hathaway expressed that this exposure deepened her empathy for Swift, noting the challenges of navigating personal growth under public scrutiny. "I was already a fan but after that I had so much empathy for her and her humanity and of course her talent," she gushed, highlighting the emotional resonance Swift's authenticity brought to the project.
The connection between the two stars became even more tangible during Swift's Eras Tour. While filming Mother Mary in Germany, Hathaway attended a concert where she experienced what she described as a "magical" moment. Initially doubting Swift's wave was directed at her, Hathaway was stunned when an assistant handed her a personal note from the singer.
"It was a note where Taylor said, 'I'm so happy you're here, I'm going to be enthusiastically waving at you,'" Hathaway recounted, joking about her delighted reaction. "She is so magical! She did the thing. I was right, I am special."
Film Details and Additional Collaborations
Mother Mary, scheduled for release on April 17, features an ensemble cast including Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, and Kaia Gerber. The plot centers on a pop star reuniting with a former friend amid a comeback, exploring themes of fame and personal transformation.
Beyond Swift's influence, Hathaway also sought guidance from singer Charli XCX for her role, discussing the intricacies of pop stardom and performing original music crafted by Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, and Jack Antonoff for the film.
Fashion and Future Projects
During her New York City appearance, Hathaway made a stylish entrance in a black minidress with velvet accents, complemented by gold accessories and platform heels. Her chic look underscored her dual focus on Mother Mary and the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2, set for release on May 1.
Reflecting on the sequel, Hathaway shared her enthusiasm, stating, "I really feel like everybody's delivering something that people could really use right now and I'm just so proud and thrilled to be in it." With these projects, Hathaway continues to blend artistic inspiration from icons like Taylor Swift with her own evolving career in entertainment.
