Richard Gadd Delves Into Controversial Scene in New BBC Series Half Man
Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the intense new BBC/HBO drama Half Man, has opened up about a particularly complex sex scene in the show's first episode. The actor and writer, who rose to fame with the Netflix hit Baby Reindeer, revealed that he intentionally crafted the moment to leave viewers with ambiguous and complicated emotions.
Divergent Reactions to a Pivotal Moment
In an interview with LadBible, Gadd explained that audiences who have seen the early episode have had "very different takes" on the scene where his character Ruben apparently helps his estranged "brother" Niall have sex for the first time. "I think that's interesting in a way... they can take away, 'That's a very dramatic thing,' and then some people see it and they're laughing, or they don't see it for what it is," Gadd said. He described it as "a very complicated situation with a million and one takeaways."
Exploring Male Repression Through Extremes
Speaking to the BBC, Gadd elaborated on his creative approach to examining male repression in the series. "I believe that in order to explore the subject of male repression, you need to show violence, or at least the extremities of it – so that we can understand the context and depths of where repression can lead," he stated. Gadd emphasized that a show exploring male existence must portray both the worst and best aspects of masculinity to paint a complete picture.
"I think a show exploring male existence in all its forms needs to show the worst – and indeed best – sides of masculinity because you are never fully exploring anything if you stray from the edges or fail to paint a full picture," he added.
Series Premise and Cast
Half Man, which Gadd created and wrote, follows two estranged "brothers" reunited on Niall's wedding day when Ruben arrives unexpectedly. The narrative flashes back to their teenage years in the 1980s, when their mothers began dating. Gadd stars opposite Jamie Bell, with Mitchell Robertson and Stuart Campbell playing younger versions of their characters.
Bell praised Gadd as a "phenomenal scene partner" who underwent a significant physical transformation, gaining considerable muscle mass for the role. "Working with Gadd has been extraordinary," Bell remarked.
Critical Reception and Release Details
An early review from The Guardian lauded the series for Gadd and Bell's "spectacular" performances, describing them as "so frank they're almost feral." The review noted that "Gadd's preoccupation with broken masculinity runs riot" in the show, which "veers close to pornography." It concluded that the drama presents trauma as making characters' destructive behavior inevitable, creating dramatically challenging viewing.
Half Man will be released weekly in the UK on BBC iPlayer starting at 6am on Friday, 24 April 2026. The series marks Gadd's return to television two years after Baby Reindeer became a global phenomenon, drawing from his personal experiences with trauma and stalking.
