FCDO Warns Against Travel to 15 Countries Ahead of Half-Term

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for British nationals ahead of the May half-term, warning against all travel to 15 countries. The list includes Iran, Israel, Syria, Haiti, and Russia, among others, with many destinations in the Middle East deemed unsafe due to security risks.

While some warnings apply to entire nations, others cover specific regions within popular holiday destinations. For example, Tunisia, which attracts around 450,000 British tourists annually, has areas near the borders with Libya and Algeria that the FCDO advises against visiting due to cross-border terrorist activity and operations by Tunisian security forces.

The FCDO also continues to advise against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, citing significant security risks from regional escalation. The guidance warns of potential targeting of US or Israeli-linked locations and urges travellers to stay away from security or military facilities.

Travellers are reminded that visiting countries or regions on the FCDO's do-not-travel list may invalidate standard travel insurance policies and limit consular assistance. The FCDO recommends registering for alerts and checking the latest guidance before making any travel arrangements.
