Georgia Jay, the actress who portrayed Steph Miligan on the long-running ITV soap Emmerdale, has officially departed the series. The 34-year-old star, who joined the show in November 2024 as the daughter of characters Ruby and Caleb, has decided not to return following her maternity leave, citing a shift in her life priorities towards motherhood.
Georgia Jay's Departure from Emmerdale
Georgia Jay's final scenes as Steph Miligan aired in 2025, when her character left the fictional village for Rome. This exit coincided with Jay's real-life pregnancy, leading her to take maternity leave starting in August of that year. She gave birth to her daughter, Noa, at the beginning of this year.
Initially, there were plans for Jay to reprise her role, with her character even informing family and friends within the show of an intended return. However, she has now made the definitive choice to step away from the demanding schedule of a full-time soap opera.
A source close to the situation revealed to The Sun, "Georgia loved her time at Emmerdale but she has no plans to return now. She’s loving being a mum and that’s her focus for now. Obviously she’s open to opportunities but returning to a full-on soap schedule full-time is just not something she can do at the moment."
Georgia Jay's Acting Career Beyond Emmerdale
Prior to her stint on Emmerdale, Georgia Jay built a diverse acting portfolio. She appeared in films such as Lake Placid vs. Anaconda, The Devil Sits on Both Shoulders, and Charity. Her television roles include portraying Diane Vickers in Giri/Haji and Clare Favarone in Glow & Darkness.
Since joining Emmerdale, she has also taken on parts as Camila in Silent Witness and Sienna Miller in The Hack, showcasing her versatility across different genres.
World Cup 2026 Threatens ITV Soap Schedules
In a separate development, Emmerdale and its sister soap Coronation Street are facing significant scheduling disruptions due to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament, set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, begins in June, with ITV expected to prioritise live match coverage during prime time slots.
This clash threatens to displace the soaps from their usual broadcasting times, adding to viewer frustration. ITV had recently introduced a "soap power hour" from 8pm to 9pm each night, but this new structure may be compromised by the World Cup schedule.
An insider explained the challenges, stating, "It’s proving quite the headache behind the scenes. Soap fans have already had to get used to the new slots, which came in at the beginning of the year, so with more changes coming there’s a real fear they could lose more viewers. Airing the episodes on a Sunday just does not work and now with the new schedule it’s very unlikely they’ll be able to run before these big World Cup matches start."
Recent Scheduling Chaos and Viewer Impact
In recent months, sporting events have already forced episodes off air entirely or pushed them to less popular Sunday evening slots, much to the annoyance of loyal audiences. Earlier this week, both Coronation Street and Emmerdale were pulled from their regular schedule, with episodes consolidated into a one-hour Sunday broadcast instead.
ITV attempted to mitigate disruption by releasing episodes early on its streaming platform, ITVX. However, this strategy has reportedly led to confusion among viewers. Despite the scheduling turmoil, the broadcaster claims that these changes have boosted digital engagement.
Streaming figures for the soaps have surged by 48 percent year-on-year, with both shows achieving their highest-ever monthly viewership records. In January 2026, Coronation Street and Emmerdale combined for 65 million streams, surpassing previous records by 10 million. Coronation Street alone reached an audience of 5.9 million across television and streaming platforms.
Emmerdale continues to air on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX, though fans may need to adapt to further schedule adjustments as the World Cup approaches.
