Denmark has renewed its defence of Greenland, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen delivering a pointed message to US President Donald Trump: 'If you threaten us, we will respond.' The remark comes as Copenhagen and Washington continue discussions over Greenland, which Trump has repeatedly argued should become US territory, citing national security concerns.
Working Group Established
In an interview with Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Ms Frederiksen revealed that a high-level working group has been established to continue talks with the United States. However, she made clear that Denmark has no intention of conceding its sovereign borders. 'I am not seeking a conflict with the United States, but if someone threatens us, we will respond,' she emphasised to journalist Bartosz T Wieliński.
European Support
According to the Danish PM, following US threats about taking control of Greenland, all European allies expressed support for Denmark and pledged to act similarly if such a situation arose. Ms Frederiksen expressed hope that America would understand that the loyalty of Greenland’s population cannot be 'bought', and that the islanders can determine their own future.
NATO Activity in the Arctic
Ms Frederiksen also noted that NATO has increased its activity in the Arctic region in the wake of Trump's threats. She argued that a stronger allied presence in and around Greenland should put an end to the debate over the island's sovereignty.
Trump's Social Media Antics
The comments come after Trump shared a meme on his Truth Social platform depicting himself as a giant figure peeking over Greenland's mountainous horizon, with the headline 'Hello, Greenland!' The image, reminiscent of Godzilla, underscored his persistent interest in acquiring the island. Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland is vital for US national security, much to the chagrin of Greenland, its people, and the Kingdom of Denmark.
