A 10-year-old girl has died after falling from a fourth-floor apartment in Lorient, Brittany, France, on Sunday evening. Emergency services, including paramedics and fire crews, rushed to the scene at 4 Rue Gabriel-Fauré in the Bois du Château neighbourhood, but were unable to resuscitate the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
French authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Public prosecutor Laëtitia Mirande stated that an inquiry into the causes of death has been opened, adding that initial investigations do not suggest the involvement of a third party. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the coming days.
The child, who was from the Comoros archipelago off Africa's east coast, has left the local Comorian community deeply affected, according to French daily Ouest-France. The family will be referred to France Victimes for support, as confirmed by the prosecutor.
There is no indication of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fall, which occurred in a working-class area of the western French city. The investigation continues.
