Belgium PM Threatens Sanctions on Israel Over Gaza Destruction in Diplomatic Earthquake
Belgium PM threatens Israel with sanctions over Gaza

In a move that signals a dramatic hardening of European stance, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has declared that his country is prepared to take concrete action against Israel, including the consideration of sanctions and trade measures. This comes in response to Israel's ongoing military offensive in Gaza and its potential non-compliance with the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) rulings.

The warning was delivered unequivocally during an interview with VRT network, where De Croo stated, "If Israel does not comply with the measures ordered by the ICJ, for example, not to carry out acts of genocide, it must be held accountable." He emphasised that all options, including sanctions, are on the table as a means of ensuring accountability.

EU's Internal Divide on Israel Laid Bare

De Croo's comments have thrown a spotlight on the deep and growing divisions within the European Union regarding its approach to Israel. While nations like Germany have maintained a traditionally supportive stance, Belgium, alongside Ireland and Spain, has emerged as one of Israel's most vocal critics within the bloc.

This rift was further exposed by the recent ICJ case, which saw the three countries push for stronger EU support for the proceedings against Israel—a move that was ultimately blocked.

A Legal and Diplomatic Reckoning

The Prime Minister framed the potential sanctions not as an isolated political decision but as a necessary response to a breach of international law. "If the decisions of the International Court of Justice are not respected, there must be consequences," he asserted, linking any future punitive measures directly to the rule of law.

This position aligns with Belgium's history of advocating for a tougher line, having previously supported the suspension of the EU's association agreement with Israel—a key trade and diplomatic pact.

The threat from a founding EU member state represents a significant diplomatic escalation and underscores the increasing international pressure on Israel to alter its strategy in Gaza, as the humanitarian crisis there deepens.
