Former television presenter Michael Barrymore has been left visibly emotional after relocating to a new home in South Devon, where he received an unexpectedly warm reception from the local community.

The 74-year-old entertainer, best known for hosting Strike It Lucky, collected the keys to his coastal property last weekend. Like many embarking on a significant move, Barrymore admitted to feeling anxious about integrating into a new neighbourhood and adapting to a different lifestyle.
An Overwhelming Community Welcome
However, any trepidation was swiftly dispelled when a group of local schoolboys gathered outside his driveway to greet him. "All the kids in the neighbourhood found out where I live and they all showed up on my driveway to say hi and greet me to the neighbourhood," Barrymore recounted in a recent TikTok vlog documenting his move.
He became tearful after their departure, reflecting, "I've never had such an outpouring of love after moving into a new place and these kids today are so polite and smile." The gesture was so touching that Barrymore was subsequently invited to participate in a drama lesson at their local school, an offer he gladly accepted.
Settling In and Slowing Down
In his latest social media update, Barrymore told his 4.3 million TikTok followers, "I can't believe I've been in my new home for nearly a week already and this move has been quite stressful, so I've cut down to one job a day so I'm not overwhelmed by it all."
His current living situation is a work in progress. He is temporarily sleeping on a mattress on the floor while awaiting a custom-made pink bed, designed to match his sofa, which is scheduled for delivery in June. The bedroom remains sparsely furnished, with just a pair of compact bedside tables, a lamp, and a phone charger, alongside a pile of laundry.
Furniture for his kitchen, including a table and benches from Scandinavia, is expected to arrive next week. Barrymore added, "They're arriving from Scandinavia next week and I've also got to clean my oven and hobs so I can show you some cooking."
Exploring the Locale and Rebuilding a Profile
Since the move, Barrymore has been exploring his stunning new surroundings in South Devon. He has visited local beaches, popped into Cranch's Sweet Shop in Salcombe, and browsed several garden centres, sharing these experiences with his online audience.
This positive chapter marks a significant turnaround for Barrymore, whose broadcasting career was severely impacted by the tragic death of Stuart Lubbock in the swimming pool at his Essex home in 2001. Although arrested, he was released without charge, and the case remains open after 25 years.
In recent years, he has successfully rebuilt his public profile through social media, amassing a substantial following and reconnecting with fans in a more personal way.
Fan Reactions and Community Integration
Followers have praised his down-to-earth approach and community spirit. One fan commented, "I bet all them kids think you are just a TikTok influencer... little do they know they met a world legend!"
Another applauded his involvement, stating, "Turning up to the drama class is iconic. So many famous people wouldn't do this. The fact you have time for people. Class act from day one."
A third supporter noted, "You've been there five minutes and you're already a part of the community! So lovely to see!" Barrymore's emotional response to his warm welcome underscores a heartfelt new beginning in Devon.
