Sir David Attenborough to Share Intimate Memories in BBC Documentary Honouring Queen Elizabeth II
A new BBC documentary, produced to commemorate what would have been Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday, will feature Sir David Attenborough offering personal reflections on the late monarch. The programme, titled Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century, is scheduled to air at 9pm on BBC One this Sunday, blending archive footage with contemporary insights from celebrities, close friends, and members of the royal family.
Attenborough's Decades-Long Friendship with the Queen
Born just weeks apart in 1926, Sir David enjoyed a close friendship with Queen Elizabeth II that spanned over six decades. In a clip from the documentary, he describes her innate regality, stating: 'The reality of being Queen was very evident to her at all times. It wasn't something that she put on like a coat or something. It was in the marrow of her bones. She was regal.' His contributions to royal engagements include producing her televised Christmas Day addresses in the 1980s and 1990s, appearing on The Queen's Green Planet in 2018, and featuring in the BBC's Platinum Party at the Palace in 2022 for her Platinum Jubilee.
Sir David was knighted by the Queen in 1985 and later appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2020 for services to television broadcasting and conservation. Following her death in September 2022, he poignantly captured the national sentiment, remarking: 'The whole nation is bereaved.'
Royal Insights and Childhood Memories
The documentary also includes contributions from Baroness Glenconner, a childhood friend of both Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret. Selected as a maid of honour during the 1953 coronation, Baroness Glenconner recalls the electrifying moment on the Buckingham Palace balcony: 'People were absolutely thrilled. I remember going on the balcony and the crowd packed together, roaring. You could actually feel it on one. And every time she turned to go they wouldn't let her.'
Other notable figures featured in the programme are Queen Camilla, Dame Helen Mirren, former US President Barack Obama, and Dame Sheila Hancock. The documentary aims to reflect on the Queen's long life and legacy, using a mix of news interviews and archival material to explore how modern Britain has been shaped during her reign.
Commemorative Stamps Mark the Centenary Milestone
In addition to the documentary, Royal Mail is honouring the Queen's centenary with a special edition of twelve stamps. A main set of eight stamps showcases key moments from her life, including her first radio broadcast at age 14 in 1940 and her coronation balcony appearance in 1953. Four additional stamps in a miniature sheet depict her with beloved horses and dogs throughout her life.
Catherine Catton, Head of Factual Entertainment and Events at the BBC, emphasised the documentary's significance: 'Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century explores the life of her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through the lens of a century of change and offers an important reflection on how modern Britain has been shaped.' The late Queen would have turned 100 on April 21, making this tribute a timely celebration of her enduring impact.
