Albanese Breaks Silence on Rudd’s Awkward Trump Meeting

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has addressed the tense exchange between US President Donald Trump and Australian ambassador Kevin Rudd during a White House meeting. Trump told Rudd, “I don’t like you either. And I probably never will,” referencing critical comments Rudd made about Trump in 2021. The remark was met with laughter, which Albanese joined, as diplomatic tensions appeared to ease.

The incident occurred when an Australian reporter asked Trump about Rudd’s past description of him as a “village idiot.” Trump initially claimed ignorance of Rudd, then jokingly asked if Rudd was still working for Australia. When Albanese pointed Rudd out, Trump made the blunt statement before moving on. Later, Rudd apologised to Trump, who responded, “all is forgiven.”

Despite the awkward moment, the overall meeting was positive. Trump endorsed the AUKUS pact and signed an $8.5 billion rare earths deal with Australia. He praised Albanese as a “great leader” and showed no lasting animosity towards Rudd, suggesting the controversy had been overstated by critics.

Albanese’s reaction—laughing off the exchange—signalled relief that the encounter did not derail bilateral relations. The Australian delegation viewed the outcome as a success, with Trump’s strong backing of AUKUS and the critical minerals deal seen as key achievements.
