Robison Urges UK Government to 'Finally Step Up' for Glasgow After Fire
Scotland's Finance Secretary Shona Robison has issued a strong demand for the UK Government to provide immediate financial support to Glasgow City Council in the aftermath of the devastating Union Corner fire. Robison described the situation as critical, emphasizing that Glasgow deserves robust assistance from Westminster.
Meeting with Treasury Officials in Belfast
Robison is scheduled to meet Chief Secretary to the Treasury James Murray in Belfast on Thursday. This high-level discussion aims to address the urgent need for UK intervention. The Finance Secretary will press for concrete commitments to help rebuild the affected area and support local businesses.
Robison expressed frustration, stating, "It is frankly astonishing that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has so far done nothing to support Glasgow. Yet again, Scotland's biggest city is left as an afterthought by Labour." Her comments highlight growing tensions between the Scottish and UK governments over disaster response.
Scottish Government's Recovery Package
The Scottish Government has already announced a comprehensive £10 million recovery support package for the area. This initiative includes:
- Direct financial assistance for businesses previously housed in the damaged building.
- Up to £1 million to aid with demolition costs of the B-listed Victorian structure.
- An increase in non-domestic rates hardship relief from 75% to 95%.
Demolition work has commenced on the remains of the historic building, while Glasgow Central station, Scotland's busiest, partially reopened on Wednesday after a ten-day closure due to the blaze.
Council Leader Calls for UK Involvement
Susan Aitken, leader of the SNP-run Glasgow City Council, has also called on UK ministers to step in. She asserted that Westminster "absolutely has a role in this" and expects a clear offer of support. Aitken praised the Scottish Government's response, noting that officials are actively engaging with UK civil servants to secure matching commitments.
Robison concluded, "The SNP Government will always do everything in our power to make Glasgow flourish – and it is time for the UK Government to step up." The UK Government has yet to comment publicly on the demands, leaving the outcome of Thursday's meeting highly anticipated.
