Ollie Watkins Backs Jude Bellingham to Shine at World Cup
Ollie Watkins Backs Bellingham for World Cup Success

Ollie Watkins has described Jude Bellingham as the 'complete midfielder' and backed him to take the World Cup by storm this summer. The Aston Villa striker, speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, heaped praise on the Real Madrid star ahead of England's campaign in North America under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Watkins Praises Bellingham's All-Round Game

Watkins highlighted Bellingham's versatility and physical attributes as key strengths. "His super strength is, I think, he's an all-round complete midfielder. I think that he can do everything, and I think his physical capability as well. Getting around the pitch, he always wants the ball," Watkins said. He added that Bellingham's willingness to track back and sprint forward makes him invaluable, and his confidence sets him apart: "I think he can run a game, and I think his confidence and belief in himself, I think that's one thing that probably takes him to the next level."

Dismissing Criticism

Bellingham has faced criticism for his on-field behaviour, including confrontations with referees and perceived arrogance. However, Watkins dismissed these claims, insisting the 22-year-old shows maturity beyond his years. "To be fair, whenever I've played with him, I think I've looked around and thought, you would feel like he's a 28, 30-year-old guy. The way he handles himself, and the way he carries himself," Watkins explained. He noted that Bellingham's passionate gestures on the pitch are aimed at lifting the team, not complaining: "On the pitch, he's throwing his arms around, not like moaning, but to get the crowd going. And I think he gives off a feeling that, you know, just to always believe and keep pushing."

Leadership Qualities

Watkins emphasised that Bellingham thrives under pressure and willingly takes on responsibility. "I think he likes that responsibility - and takes it on his shoulders. And as a team-mate, it's good to see players that do that," he said. Bellingham endured a difficult season with Real Madrid, which saw the club fail to win any trophies and sack two managers. But Watkins believes the midfielder will put that behind him and replicate his 2022 World Cup performances in Qatar, where he shone for England.
