Zelensky Rebuts Trump's Peace Claim as UK Pledges £20m Energy Aid
Zelensky hits back at Trump over Ukraine peace talks claim

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a firm rebuttal to former US President Donald Trump's suggestion that he is obstructing peace negotiations to end the war with Russia. Zelensky asserted that Ukraine will "never be an obstacle to peace," pointing to Moscow's ongoing bombardment as clear evidence of the Kremlin's disinterest in a ceasefire.

Diplomatic Discussions and Russian Onslaught

The Ukrainian leader's comments came on Thursday, 15 January 2026, following a conversation with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte. Zelensky confirmed they discussed diplomatic engagement with the United States amid the protracted conflict. He directly linked his stance to Russia's continuous military campaign, stating that Vladimir Putin's forces are engaged in a sustained "attempt to destroy Ukraine" using missiles and drone strikes.

This response was triggered by Donald Trump's remarks earlier the same day. When questioned about the stalled US-led efforts to resolve Europe's largest land war since WWII, Trump singled out "Zelensky" as the reason. The former president claimed that Putin "is ready to make a deal" while "Ukraine is less ready."

UK Announces Emergency Energy Support Package

As diplomatic exchanges continued, Ukraine faced another severe wave of attacks on its critical energy infrastructure. Russia has been weaponising the harsh winter conditions, with temperatures plunging to -20°C, to inflict maximum suffering on the civilian population.

In response, President Zelensky declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, emphasising the urgent need for repairs and resilience. On Friday, 16 January 2026, the United Kingdom stepped in with a new £20 million package of emergency support specifically for Ukraine's energy network.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) stated the funding would be directed towards repairing, restoring, and protecting Ukraine's power grid. It highlighted that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including vulnerable children and the elderly, have been left without heat or electricity.

Revealing Battlefield Statistics and International Scepticism

Amid the strategic discussions, a revealing military assessment emerged. A recent intelligence briefing provided to British officials by their Ukrainian counterparts showed a staggering casualty ratio in the battle for the key city of Kupiansk in Kharkiv. For every Ukrainian soldier lost, an estimated 27 Russian soldiers were killed.

The briefing, held last week, aimed to demonstrate Kyiv's capacity to reclaim territory despite Moscow's reliance on overwhelming numerical advantage, often described as "meat grinder" tactics. A defence source told The Times that around 200 Russian soldiers were encircled by advancing Ukrainian forces in the fight for Kupiansk just before Christmas. Ukraine regained control of the city last month, now holding nearly 90% of this strategic northeastern town.

The prospect of a near-term peace agreement appears dim. Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles expressed deep scepticism on Thursday, stating that "Putin does not seem to want peace" and that Russia would reject any foreign peacekeeping troops on its terms.

Meanwhile, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva visited Kyiv on Thursday, meeting with top officials including President Zelensky and Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. Her visit, which included inspecting war-damaged energy sites, comes as Ukraine approaches the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion on 24 February.

The situation remains tense on multiple fronts, with Russia expelling a British diplomat over spying allegations and emergency crews in Kharkiv battling fires caused by fresh Russian strikes. Nato's Mark Rutte reiterated the alliance's commitment on social media, writing, "We're committed to ensuring that Ukraine continues to get the crucial support needed to defend today and ultimately secure a lasting peace."
