The Foreign Office has issued an urgent alert warning that "the risk of sudden escalation is high" in the Middle East, coinciding with "unusual" movements by British submarines.
Official FCDO guidance, updated on 27 October, is advising Britons to brace for potential flight cancellations and travel disruption.
Unusual submarine deployment
The warning comes at a time when it's understood that three of Britain's four nuclear deterrent submarines are currently deployed at sea. The reason for the submarines being at sea remains unclear; at least one will be carrying nuclear warheads on routine patrol, according to Sky.
One is thought to be preparing to assume patrol duties, while the third may be conducting sea trials, an expert suggested. The deployment indicates enhanced availability, which has been a challenge for the Royal Navy's submarine fleet in recent years.
Message to rivals
A source told The Times, which broke the story, that having three submarines at sea at once is "unusual," though they declined to elaborate further. Both Britain's adversaries and NATO partners will take note of the activity.
It could be viewed as significant, considering the devastating weaponry they carry. Therefore, the submarine deployment might be interpreted as a message to rivals.
Maintenance and official response
The fourth Trident submarine, HMS Victorious, is currently at Devonport naval base undergoing maintenance. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "Our nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of our national security, protecting the UK and our NATO allies every moment of every day.
"We remain the only European ally to commit its nuclear deterrent to the defence of NATO. This means that all NATO Allies already benefit from the protection of our nuclear deterrent."
Regional tensions
With the submarines deployed at sea, the Foreign Office warning extends to airspace across several nations, including Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan and Yemen.
The FCDO has cautioned that Iran has announced plans to strike targets linked to the US and Israel amid mounting tensions in the region.
