The UK government has issued a forceful rebuke to former US President Donald Trump over what it describes as "utterly ridiculous" and false comments regarding the role of Nato troops in Afghanistan. In a Fox News interview, Mr Trump suggested that Nato allies, including British forces, did not fully engage on the front lines during the conflict, a claim that has sparked outrage in Westminster.
Downing Street Defends UK Sacrifices
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Mr Trump's remarks, asserting that UK forces served alongside US and Nato troops in "sustained combat operations" throughout the Afghanistan campaign. The spokesperson highlighted the profound sacrifices made by British service personnel, noting that 457 lost their lives and many hundreds more were wounded in the line of duty.
Defence Minister's Personal Rebuttal
Defence Minister Al Carns, a former commando who served five tours in Afghanistan, described Mr Trump's comments as "ridiculous" and emphasised the shared sacrifices of international forces. Mr Carns stated that such claims undermine the bravery and commitment of all Nato troops who fought in the region.
Mr Trump's statements also questioned Nato's willingness to support America if needed, despite the alliance being invoked after the 9/11 attacks—a point that further fuelled the criticism from UK officials. The government's response underscores ongoing tensions in transatlantic relations and a firm commitment to honouring military service.
