Two National Guardsmen Killed in Washington DC Shooting
A shooting in Washington DC this afternoon has resulted in the deaths of two National Guard members, prompting a furious response from former President Donald Trump and placing the White House on lockdown.
Trump's Furious Social Media Response
Donald Trump, who was at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when the incident occurred, was briefed on the situation according to his press secretary. He subsequently took to his Truth Social platform to issue a strongly worded statement.
The former president described the suspect as "the animal that shot the two National Guardsmen" and confirmed that both victims had been critically wounded and taken to separate hospitals. He declared that the suspect, who was also severely wounded, "will pay a very steep price" for the attack.
In his post, Trump wrote: "God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!"
Governor Confirms Tragic Outcome
Shortly after Trump's statement was published, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed the devastating news that both National Guardsmen had succumbed to their injuries.
In an official tweet, Governor Morrisey stated: "It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC have passed away from their injuries."
The governor emphasised that these "brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country" and confirmed that his office remains in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.
Morrisey added that the entire state grieves with the families and loved ones of the fallen guardsmen, vowing that West Virginia "will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act."
The White House remains on lockdown as authorities continue to monitor the situation and investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
