UK Pledges £20m Energy Aid as Lammy Reaffirms 100-Year Ukraine Pact in Kyiv
Lammy in Kyiv: UK pledges £20m and reaffirms Ukraine pact

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has used a landmark visit to Kyiv to declare that Britain stands "shoulder to shoulder" with Ukraine, marking the first anniversary of a historic bilateral pact and announcing new financial support for the war-torn nation's energy infrastructure.

Anniversary Visit and a New £20 Million Pledge

The visit on Friday, 16 January 2026, was timed to commemorate one year since the signing of a 100-year partnership agreement between the UK and Ukraine, a long-term framework designed to deepen cooperation on defence, security, and trade. During the trip, the British government revealed it is providing an additional £20 million to help Ukraine repair and protect its energy systems, which have been relentlessly targeted by Russian missile and drone strikes.

"I am privileged to be here to mark the first anniversary of our 100-year partnership because Ukraine’s security is our security," Mr Lammy stated from the Ukrainian capital. He framed the relationship as a fundamental strategic necessity, emphasising that the alliance represents more than symbolic solidarity. "This is more than just solidarity. Our friendship is a shared stand against Russian aggression across Europe," he added.

Meetings with Zelensky and Site of Russian Strikes

The Deputy Prime Minister's itinerary underscored the grim reality of the ongoing conflict. He visited the site of a recent Russian missile strike, witnessing first-hand the devastation inflicted on civilian infrastructure. He also addressed a summit of Ukrainian and international business leaders, aiming to unlock investment, before holding talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a statement on social media, President Zelensky confirmed the discussions had focused on Russia's daily attacks on energy facilities and strategies to strengthen air defences. "We are grateful for the UK’s decision to provide an energy support package for Ukraine right now, when it is most needed," the Ukrainian leader wrote. He extended his thanks to the British government and public for their continued assistance.

A "Partnership for Freedom" and Lasting Commitment

Mr Lammy positioned the UK at the forefront of sustained international support for Kyiv, referencing the leadership of the 'Coalition of the Willing'. He concluded his public remarks with a powerful reaffirmation of the bilateral bond, stating: "The UK and Ukraine stand shoulder to shoulder as true partners for freedom, committed to a just peace and a stronger, safer future for both our nations."

This high-profile diplomatic mission, coming just weeks into the new year, signals the UK's intent to maintain its prominent role in supporting Ukraine's defence and long-term resilience, solidifying the principles of the century-long partnership signed a year ago.
