The teenage son and anointed successor of Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov is reportedly fighting for his life in a Moscow hospital after a high-speed car crash, with sources describing him as "hardly recognisable".
Emergency Airlift to Moscow
Adam Kadyrov, 18, was involved in a serious collision while part of a large convoy on the Staropromyslovskoe Highway in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. Following the crash, he was urgently airlifted to the Russian capital. An An-148-100EM "flying hospital" aircraft operated by the emergency ministry made the two-hour flight from Grozny, landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was subsequently transferred to the elite Botkin Hospital, with reports indicating he was flown directly to the rooftop via medical helicopter. Despite official attempts to downplay his condition, opposition accounts state the young Kadyrov is in an "extremely critical condition" with injuries including a ruptured spleen and broken ribs.
A Succession Crisis in the Making?
The incident has ignited intense speculation about a behind-the-scenes power struggle in the restive Russian republic. Ramzan Kadyrov, a key ally of Vladimir Putin, is himself believed to be seriously ill and has been manoeuvring to install his son as his successor.
However, Adam's youth and rapid promotion have reportedly caused friction. A report from October 2025 eerily predicted that an "accidental" road traffic accident involving Adam could clear the path for rival contender Magomed Daudov, the 45-year-old head of the Chechen parliament. The report suggested such a scenario could be engineered by Russia's FSB security service.
Propaganda and a Gold Pistol
In the wake of the crash, Ramzan Kadyrov's administration released pre-recorded footage of Adam chairing a state meeting and receiving an award for protecting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine—an event filmed two days prior. Russian state media has been barred from meaningful coverage of the accident.
Adam Kadyrov, despite his age, holds a staggering array of official posts, including security chief of Chechnya and head of his father's personal security service. He gained notoriety last year when, at his wedding aged 17, he was filmed firing a gold pistol from the driver's seat of a Mercedes G-Class, while wearing a watch valued at over £5 million.
The future of Chechnya's leadership now hangs in the balance as the condition of the intended heir remains shrouded in secrecy and suspicion.
