In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a major drone strike on Israel. The attack comes amidst intensified Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) operations in Gaza, targeting Hamas officials.
The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, announced the operation, stating a 'large batch' of drones was launched towards 'sensitive targets' in Israel. He declared these strikes would continue until what he called 'Israeli aggression' ceases.
Gaza Under Intense Bombardment
Simultaneously, the IDF conducted a series of heavy airstrikes in Gaza. Palestinian media reported that an building in the upscale Rimal neighbourhood, allegedly housing the office of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, was completely destroyed. The building was also said to be near the Israeli liaison office for coordinating aid into Gaza.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of devastation, with plumes of smoke rising over Gaza City. The precise casualty figures from the latest strikes remain unclear as emergency services scramble to search the rubble.
Qatar's Delicate Mediating Role
The timing of the strikes is particularly sensitive given ongoing diplomatic efforts. Qatar, which has been a key mediator in negotiations between Hamas and Israel, condemned the bombing of the building. A source close to the negotiations suggested the strike could severely complicate the already fragile talks.
This multi-front activity highlights the growing risk of the conflict spreading beyond Gaza and Israel's immediate borders, drawing in Iranian-backed militant groups across the region and threatening to destabilise the wider Middle East.
