A National Guard member is fighting for his life in hospital following a deadly shooting last week near the White House in Washington, D.C.
Guardsman Shows Signs of Progress
Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe "remains in serious condition", according to West Virginia Governor Craig Caplan, who provided an update on Monday, 1 December 2025. However, the Governor confirmed there were positive signs as Wolfe recovers in hospital.
Medical staff report that Wolfe was able to respond to a nurse. When asked if he could hear, the wounded guardsman gave a "thumbs up" and wiggled his toes, indicating awareness and neurological function.
Fatal Attack Near the White House
The shooting, which occurred last week, resulted in the death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. The two service members were on duty when the attack unfolded. The alleged gunman, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national and former U.S. intelligence collaborator, is accused of rounding a corner and opening fire on the troops.
Lakanwal now faces federal murder charges in connection with the attack. The incident has raised significant concerns about security in the vicinity of key government buildings in the American capital.
Ongoing Recovery and Investigation
While the focus remains on Staff Sgt. Wolfe's recovery, the investigation into the motive and circumstances of the shooting continues. The attack near such a symbolic seat of power underscores the persistent threats faced by military personnel on protective duties. The National Guard and federal authorities are likely to review security protocols in the wake of this tragedy.
The community and the nation await further health updates on Andrew Wolfe as he battles his serious injuries, while simultaneously mourning the loss of Spc. Sarah Beckstrom.
