The devastated parents of a young British man who made the ultimate sacrifice while volunteering in Ukraine have broken their silence, expressing both immense pride in their son's courage and profound disappointment in the British government's response to his death.
'He Was No Mere Statistic'
Sam Newey, just 20 years old from Solihull, West Midlands, lost his life while fighting Russian forces in September 2023. His father, Paul Newey, and mother, Helena, have spoken exclusively about their son's decision to join the international effort supporting Ukraine.
'We are immensely proud of Sam's courage,' Paul Newey stated, his voice filled with emotion. 'He wasn't just a soldier, he wasn't a statistic - he was our son who believed passionately in defending freedom.'
Foreign Office Under Fire
The family has launched scathing criticism against the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, accusing them of offering minimal support during their darkest hours.
'The lack of meaningful contact from the Foreign Office has been shocking,' Paul revealed. 'We received one brief phone call, then nothing. It feels like we've been completely abandoned by our own government.'
A Brother's Anguish
Sam's older brother, Daniel Newey, who had previously fought alongside him in Ukraine before returning to Britain, echoed the family's frustrations. 'The contrast between Ukrainian gratitude and British bureaucratic indifference is staggering,' he said.
The family's ordeal highlights the complex position of British citizens who choose to fight in foreign conflicts, and raises serious questions about the government's responsibility toward them and their families.
The Human Cost of War
Sam's story represents the growing number of international volunteers who have paid the ultimate price in Ukraine. His family emphasised that behind every casualty figure lies a human story, a family shattered, and dreams unfulfilled.
'We want people to understand that these are real people making real sacrifices,' Helena Newey added. 'Our son believed he was fighting for what was right, and we will honour his memory by ensuring he's never forgotten.'
