A former Afghan commando, who fought alongside British forces, has bravely spoken out about the horrific torture he endured at the hands of the Taliban after being left behind following the UK's withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The soldier, whose identity remains protected for safety reasons, was part of an elite unit trained and supported by British troops. After the fall of Kabul in 2021, he was captured by the Taliban and subjected to months of brutal interrogation and abuse.
A Soldier Abandoned
"They beat me daily, electrocuted me, and kept me in a dark cell for weeks," the commando revealed. "I thought I would die there." His account highlights the plight of many Afghan allies who were promised safety but left vulnerable when Western forces withdrew.
UK Government Under Fire
The UK's Veterans Minister has faced mounting criticism over the government's failure to evacuate all Afghan personnel who served alongside British forces. Campaigners argue that more should have been done to protect those who risked their lives working with the UK military.
"These are people who stood with us in the fight against terrorism," said a spokesperson for a veterans' charity. "Leaving them behind is a moral failure."
Call for Action
Human rights groups and military advocates are now urging the UK government to accelerate resettlement schemes for Afghan veterans still trapped under Taliban rule. "We owe them a debt of honour," said one former British officer.
