HMV is set to make a comeback in Chelmsford city centre later this year with a new store at the Meadows Shopping Centre. The music and entertainment retailer previously operated a branch at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre, which closed in 2024 after more than two decades.
The new outlet will join existing tenants including Burger King, Costa, and Suit Direct. Other upcoming openings at the centre include Smoke and Pepper in April and Hollywood Bowl before the end of the year.
HMV has begun hiring for supervisor and sales assistant roles, though an exact opening date has not been confirmed. A spokesperson said: 'HMV is excited to open a new shop in Chelmsford later this year. While we are unable to share any details at the moment, we will share further information nearer the time.'
The chain entered administration twice, in 2013 and 2018, before being acquired by Canadian retailer Sunrise Records in 2019. Since then, HMV has expanded beyond DVDs and CDs to focus on vinyl records, pop culture merchandise, tech accessories, and live in-store performances.
