HMV, the iconic music and entertainment retailer, is set to make a comeback in Chelmsford city centre later this year. The chain will open a new store at the Meadows Shopping Centre, marking its return after more than two years since its previous outlet closed.
New Store Details
The brand previously operated at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre for over two decades before shutting its doors in 2024. That location had hosted numerous album signings and events featuring major figures from the music and entertainment world. While an exact opening date has not been confirmed, HMV has stated the store will launch "later this year." The retailer has already begun hiring, advertising supervisor and sales assistant roles online.
HMV will join other brands at the Meadows Shopping Centre, including Burger King, Costa, and Suit Direct. The shopping centre is also set to welcome Smoke and Pepper, a burger and fried chicken eatery, in April, while Hollywood Bowl will occupy a unit before the end of the year.
Company Background
A spokesperson for HMV said: "HMV is excited to open a new shop in Chelmsford later this year. While we are unable to share any details at the moment, we will share further information nearer the time." The chain has a turbulent history, having entered administration twice: first in January 2013 and again in December 2018. However, in early 2019, HMV was acquired by Sunrise Records, a Canadian music retailer owned by Doug Putman. The acquisition preserved approximately 100 stores and the majority of jobs.
Since then, HMV has diversified its offerings beyond DVDs and CDs, focusing on vinyl records, pop culture merchandise, tech accessories, and hosting live in-store performances. This revival reflects the brand's resilience and adaptation to changing retail trends.
