A tragic incident unfolded in Bundaberg on Wednesday when a 78-year-old man was fatally attacked with a metal pole while walking his dog. The elderly victim, from North Isis, was on White Bridge Road at approximately 2:40 PM when a random man allegedly struck him. He sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man, then drove to the nearby town of Childers, where he allegedly began choking a 66-year-old man with a garden hose. Bystanders intervened to restrain him until police arrived. Witnesses described the suspect as experiencing a psychotic episode. A local officer apprehended the man and took him into custody.
A family friend of the deceased described him as a 'very friendly' individual who loved walking his dog daily. 'He was a very nice guy, very friendly and outgoing,' the friend told the Courier Mail. 'He was always walking his dog, taking him out for daily walks. He was friendly every time we drove past, he'd always wave at us. He walked down that street pretty much every single day.'
These attacks were part of a series of violent incidents that occurred within 30 minutes. Earlier, the suspect allegedly deliberately reversed his car into another vehicle, punched the driver multiple times in the head, and fled. At around 2:30 PM, a Mitsubishi Pajero was stopped behind a silver Subaru Liberty at a pedestrian crossing on North Street near Hinkler Street. The Subaru reversed into the Pajero, and when the 65-year-old driver of the Pajero got out to inspect the damage, the Subaru reversed into him again. The victim was taken to Bundaberg Hospital with serious head injuries.
Earlier that day, the same silver Subaru Liberty was involved in a traffic crash on the Bruce Highway at Glenorchy, where it deliberately reversed into a Tesla. The suspect then verbally abused the Tesla driver before driving off. Police confirmed that the victims are not believed to be known to the man.
On Thursday morning, police announced that the 36-year-old has been charged with murder and several other serious offences, including attempted murder, acts intended to maim or disfigure, and dangerous operation of a vehicle and evasion. He is scheduled to appear at Gladstones Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with further information or relevant footage to contact police.
