A teenager has ignited a heated debate about public transport etiquette after she occupied two seats on a bus to accommodate her heavy shopping bags. The 19-year-old, who shared her experience on Reddit, explained that she placed her bags on the adjacent seat because they were "super heavy and hurt to carry." She attempted to position them in front of her legs, but they "hardly fit."
The Incident
According to the teen, she boarded the bus when it was relatively quiet and saw no issue with using the seat next to her for her bags. As the journey progressed, the bus became increasingly crowded, eventually forcing some passengers to stand. Despite this, she chose not to move her bags, rationalizing that "most people don't want to sit next to strangers anyway." She added, "A lot of the time people will end up standing instead of sitting in an empty seat next to someone they don't know - also no one said anything to me."
The Confrontation
When she reached her stop, a fellow passenger confronted her, accusing her of being "inconsiderate and rude." The passenger remarked, "You could have moved your bag and not been inconsiderate and rude. Everyone wants to sit not just you." The teen admitted she did not respond because she was unsure what to say. She later defended her actions, stating, "The person who said that never asked me to move my stuff, and if they did I probably would have."
Online Reactions
Reddit users were quick to criticize the teen's behavior. One user commented, "You don't wait for someone to ask you to do the right thing." Another added, "Once the bus started getting more crowded to the point where people were standing, you should have moved your bags. You shouldn't need to be asked to do so; it's just common courtesy." A third user remarked, "Once it gets crowded, you move the bags of your own volition. It's a courtesy and used to be normal bus riding etiquette."
The debate highlights differing views on public transport etiquette, with many emphasizing that passengers should proactively free up seats for others without being asked.
