Marsden Bay steps replacement to start next month in £600k scheme
Marsden Bay steps replacement to start next month

South Tyneside Council has confirmed that work to fully replace the steps at Marsden Bay will begin next month, with the project expected to be completed by spring 2027. The scheme, funded by the council, costs over £600,000, and Esh Construction has been appointed to carry out the work.

Steps closed since December after safety concerns

The steps, located next to the Marsden Grotto, have been closed since December after inspections identified safety concerns. Access to both Marsden Rock and The Grotto pub has been limited as a result of the closure.

The council statement noted that the coastal location presents particular challenges, with the structure exposed to storm tides, saltwater and erosion. Specialist surveys, detailed assessments and design work were necessary to develop a safe, durable and long-term solution that also helps to reduce the need for future repairs and maintenance.

Emergency escape route affected

The steps also provide an emergency escape route for the Marsden Grotto when the tide is in. Their closure has therefore affected the way the business is able to operate.

Councillor Karen Pittuck, Lead Member for Highways, Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: "We know how important these steps are, both as an access route at Marsden Bay and to the operation of the Marsden Grotto, so I'm pleased that we are now in a position to move ahead with their full replacement.

"This is a challenging coastal location, and it has been important that we took the time needed to properly assess the condition of the steps and develop a safe and lasting solution. The new structure has been designed to withstand the harsh coastal conditions while helping to minimise the need for ongoing repairs and maintenance."

Business impact and construction details

In February this year, pub and hotel The Marsden Grotto said "the venue is really suffering" following the disruption caused by the work necessary to bring the stairs up to safe standards. Operations Manager Richard Gander added: "This needs to be sorted out as soon as possible, we are losing footfall, and are now looking at financial losses as a result of this."

South Tyneside Council says construction work itself will not be affected by tides. However, as cranes will be required as part of the work, progress will be weather-dependent, and operations may need to pause during periods of high winds.

Alternative access to Marsden Bay remains available via the Redwell Bank steps when tide conditions allow. Visitors are advised to check tide times before visiting the bay and to follow on-site safety signage. There is also a lift that takes people directly into the pub/restaurant on the seafront.
