Poland scrambles jets after Russian drone strikes near border

Poland mobilised its military aviation in response to a Russian assault on western Ukraine, prompting airport disruptions and renewed concerns over the conflict spilling into NATO territory.

The nation's armed forces confirmed that aircraft were operating in Polish airspace following overnight Russian drone strikes near its border. The incident resulted in disruption for a number of airports over safety while the operation was carried out.

Airport Operations Suspended

Airports in Lublin and Rzeszow had suspended flight operations to allow military aircraft to operate. In a post on X, the military stated it had deployed the necessary forces and resources, with ground-based air defence systems and radar reconnaissance put on high alert.

The command emphasised that these measures were precautionary and aimed at safeguarding Polish airspace adjacent to the threatened regions. It further noted that the situation was under surveillance and that forces remained prepared to react.

NATO Eastern Flank Concerns

This latest alert arises as Poland and other nations on NATO's eastern edge become increasingly anxious about the potential for the conflict to intensify. Romania, Moldova, Poland and the Baltic states have reported repeated drone incursions into their airspace and waters in recent months, stoking apprehensions over Russian activity near alliance territory.

Russian attacks throughout Ukraine resulted in at least 10 civilian deaths and injured 73 others in the 24 hours leading up to October 18, according to regional authorities. Three western Ukrainian regions were targeted, perpetuating Moscow's recent campaign against vital infrastructure across various parts of the country.

Ukraine's Drone Response

In the meantime, Ukraine initiated a significant overnight drone attack on Russia, allegedly dispatching hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles towards Moscow and St Petersburg. A key oil terminal in St Petersburg was hit, as well as a substantial data centre, with videos circulating online seemingly showing fires erupting.

Russia's Defence Ministry asserted it had downed approximately 1,015 Ukrainian drones across Moscow and various western regions.

These recent developments occur amidst increasing worries about the potential for further escalation between Russia and nations backing Ukraine, although Poland has not reported a direct assault on its territory in the military statement.
