Letters published in response to the obituary of Lord Jeremy Beecham have highlighted his transformative role in Newcastle's social care services from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Alongside social services director Brian Roycroft, Beecham drove the establishment of integrated, community-based care provided directly by the city council.
Residents benefited from accessible and coordinated services, including social workers, home help, nursery centres, day centres, and care homes, all managed by the same organisation and located nearby. Housing officers were also integrated into the system, ensuring a holistic approach to support.
The letters recall that hospital patients had access to on-site social workers, while psychogeriatricians visited specialist care homes, reflecting a comprehensive model of care. One correspondent described these as 'exciting and energising times,' noting that the memory of such effective services sustained them through the later period when, as a senior manager, they were tasked with dismantling the same systems.
