A significant convoy of travellers has taken over a council-operated car park in Birmingham, leading the local authority to pledge immediate action to reclaim the land. The unauthorised encampment began on Monday, with numerous caravans arriving in large numbers at Billesley Common, located off Yardley Wood Road.

The Birmingham City Council has stated its commitment to actively protecting its land and will take necessary steps to recover it from any unauthorised encroachments. This declaration follows alerts from local political candidates and campaigners, Sullimam Khan and Sanjida Chishty, who reported the situation to the council as a matter of urgency.
Impact on Local Facilities
The vehicles have parked near the entrance of Moseley Rugby Club, which remains open to the public despite the disruption. Moseley Rugby Football Club leases part of the common for their pitches, clubhouse, and a 5,000 all-seater stand. Additionally, Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre, based at the park with indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a gym, is also affected by the encampment.
The site is renowned as a haven for wildlife and a popular destination for walkers, joggers, dog owners, and families. It features Haunch Brook running through the middle of the common, along with other amenities such as a children's playground, a football pitch, and outdoor gym equipment.
The council's previous statements emphasise their proactive stance against unauthorised encampments, highlighting the ongoing efforts to balance public access with land protection. This incident underscores broader issues of land management and community impact in urban green spaces.
