Beckhams Blocked from Adding Balcony to Cotswolds Mansion

Sir David and Victoria Beckham have been denied permission to add an oak-framed balcony to their Cotswolds estate, with the local council ruling that the proposal would detract from the property's agricultural character.

Council Rejects Balcony Plans

The couple purchased the nine-bedroom farmhouse in Great Tew, Chipping Norton, in 2016 for £6.15 million and have since transformed it, doubling its value to an estimated £12 million. Their latest renovation idea involved creating a 'west elevation of the west wing' with an oak-framed balcony, but planning officer Nathan Harris raised concerns that it 'would detract from the simple agricultural character and form' of the property.

Senior conservation and design officer Bryan Martin called the balcony a 'non starter', noting it would 'obscure the threshing doorway – a characteristic feature'. He concluded there is 'no obvious way to do anything like it'. Although the house is not listed, the council determined the proposal would fail to conserve and enhance the building.

Ongoing Renovation Troubles

This rejection follows a series of planning setbacks for the Beckhams. In June, David was asked to remove a fire pit on an island in his man-made lake after an ecologist raised concerns. In March, the couple proposed adding pond lighting, but locals opposed it, fearing light pollution and disturbance to wildlife, with one critic likening the idea to turning their land into Blackpool Illuminations.

According to the Sunday Times 2025 Rich List, the Beckhams' combined net worth is $673 million (£506 million). They split their time between London, Miami, Beverly Hills, and Dubai, but the Cotswolds remains their primary home, featured prominently in the Netflix documentary Beckham.

Family Dynamics

Meanwhile, the couple are navigating a rift with their eldest son, Brooklyn, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife Nicola Peltz and has had no contact with the family for several months. Despite this, Victoria recently acknowledged her 'four amazing children' in an Instagram post celebrating 27 years of marriage to David.
