In a passionate maiden speech to the European Parliament on July 4, 2019, Brexit Party MEP Ann Widdecombe delivered a stunning takedown of the European Union, likening Britain's departure to the emancipation of slaves. Widdecombe, who died at age 78, served as Conservative MP for Maidstone for 23 years before being elected to the European Parliament in 2019.
Widdecombe's Critique of EU Democracy
Speaking with party leader Nigel Farage at her side, Widdecombe condemned the EU's leadership election process as undemocratic. She stated: "May I say, that if I need any convincing at all, that the best thing for Britain is to leave here as soon as possible. It was the way that those elections were held conducted yesterday because if that is this place's idea of democracy, then that is a serious betrayal of every country that is represented here."
Historical Parallels to Brexit
Widdecombe drew sweeping historical comparisons, asserting: "There is a pattern consistent throughout history of oppressed people turning on their oppressors, slaves against their owners, the peasantry against the feudal barons, colonies against empires, and that is why Britain is leaving … It doesn’t matter which language you use, we are leaving and we are pleased to be going. Nous allons [sic], wir gehen, we are off!" She also criticized EU fishing policies during her address.
Reaction and Legacy
Following the speech, fellow Brexit Party MEP Alexandra Phillips praised Widdecombe as representing "the ignored majority," calling her "brave and principled." Widdecombe later served as Reform UK's justice and immigration adviser. Nigel Farage paid tribute, calling her a "political colossus" and stating: "When Ann decided to stand for The Brexit Party in the snap 2019 European Elections, it was a big moment and huge boost. The voters loved her. She played a decisive role in getting Brexit over the line. Ann will be missed."
