A UK veterinarian has revealed the four dog breeds she would personally choose if she were looking for a new pet, sharing her expert insights in a trending social media post.
Vet's Top Picks
Dr Rebecca Massie MRCVS, a small-animal veterinarian and cofounder of Juno Pets, took to TikTok under the username @Junopetsuk to discuss her preferred breeds. Her recommendations are based on health, temperament, and overall suitability as family pets.
1. Greyhound
Unsurprisingly, the greyhound tops her list. Dr Massie admitted a slight bias as she owns a family Italian greyhound named Teazel. She explained that greyhounds and sight hounds generally need only a good sprint each day, spending the rest of their time lounging around. They are affectionate, good with people, and relatively healthy, though prone to dental disease.
2. Border Terrier
The border terrier is her second choice, praised for good health and infrequent vet visits. While they have some breed predispositions, they are hardy dogs with lovely personalities.
3. Labrador
Labradors are popular for good reason, according to Dr Massie. They have wonderful personalities and make excellent family dogs. However, owners must watch for joint diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as obesity due to their endless appetite, which can worsen joint issues.
4. Miniature Schnauzer
Lastly, the miniature schnauzer is recommended for its longevity (11–12 years) and even temperament. While not perfect health-wise, with some breed predispositions, they generally do well overall and score highly on personality.
Dr Massie noted that no breed is perfect, but these four stand out for their health and temperament, making them excellent choices for dog lovers.
