When I was 10 months old, I was diagnosed with an anaphylactic peanut allergy. Ever since, my family and I have joined the allergy community to honor and celebrate during National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month. This year is no different. At 26 years old, I still take time every May to reflect on my journey, push for advocacy, and connect with the allergy community online and in person. To celebrate in one of the only ways I know how, I decided to round up my favorite allergy-friendly snacks, apparel, and accessories that all anaphylactic buddies need in their corner for the year ahead.
Snacks
MadeGood Chocolate Chip Organic Granola Bites
This brand is entirely free from most common allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, wheat/gluten, soy, sesame, fish, and shellfish. They are organic, delicious, and a rare granola find for those with severe allergies.
RE:DO Plant-Based Salted Caramel Protein Bars
Though expensive, these have become my most favorite allergy-friendly snack. As someone with a peanut allergy, I rarely if ever can have protein bars, but these ones are fully nut-free and even vegan. They come in so many awesome flavors too.
Sweet Loren's Gluten Free Vegan Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough
Sweet Loren's cookies are seriously the best. Free from peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, gluten, sesame, fish, and shellfish. They come in many different flavors, but the OG chocolate chip ones are my favorite.
That's it. Gluten-Free Soft & Chewy Ready-to-Eat Fruit Bars
It seems everyone, even the allergy-free folk, are obsessed with these organic fruit bars lately. They make an awesome healthy snack for those with any of the major top 12 allergies and come in tons of unique flavor combos.
Accessories
Epi-Pals
Epi-Pals are a new plush bag charm that can safely carry your epinephrine. They can accommodate EpiPens, Auvi-Q, and Neffy sizes. They are cute, fun, and insulated too.
Auto-Injector Clip
Anyone who carries EpiPens knows how annoying it is that the two do not stay together. This nifty 3D printed clip is great for holding them in place and works perfectly with the Epi-Pals carrier to the left. Plus, it comes in tons of colors.
Allergy Alert Stickers
Often people who carry epinephrine do not have clear labels on their persons. Whether you are an adult or kid, having these stickers handy for labeling your luggage, backpack, and beyond is critical.
Food Allergy Bracelets for Kids
Growing up I had one of these bracelets for my allergies and wore it to school. I thought the characters were so much fun. You can customize it similar to how a Croc works by adding or subtracting allergen charms.
Apparel
Allergy Awareness Sweatshirt
Living with severe food allergies typically results in many forms of misunderstanding. Perhaps the biggest being that we avoid food due to 'diet.' This trendy bubble letter sweatshirt is a powerful pushback and looks so cool.
We Wear Teal T-Shirt
A personal favorite tee of mine. May is National Allergy and Asthma Awareness month, so the community supports by wearing the official color, teal. Even if you don't have your own allergies, you can wear these to show support for your loved ones.
Food Allergy Awareness Shirt
This vintage washed t-shirt is perfect for May advocacy. It comes in the allergy awareness teal color and even has a stylish little bow print. What I love about this pick is its subtle but still effective.
Too Cute For Gluten Hat
Where are all my gluten allergy girlies at? This hat was too funny to pass up on. It is a comic yet very much serious depiction of life with Celiac or other serious gluten allergies. It comes in tons of unique color combos.
