Limescale in showers can be eliminated in just 10 minutes using white vinegar, a common kitchen ingredient, according to a cleaning enthusiast on TikTok. The method involves soaking kitchen roll in vinegar and placing it on affected areas.
Why limescale forms
Limescale develops when hard water, rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium, evaporates and leaves behind a chalky white residue. Also known as calcium carbonate, it is more common in areas with hard water.
The vinegar method
Lily, known as Clean with Lily on TikTok, suggests soaking sheets of kitchen roll in white vinegar and laying them directly over limescale-affected areas. Add more vinegar if needed, then leave for about 10 minutes. When the tissue is removed, the limescale should have vanished.
White vinegar works because its acetic acid triggers a chemical reaction that breaks down the alkaline calcium and magnesium compounds forming limescale. The vinegar dissolves the mineral deposits without damaging the shower.
Other uses
Vinegar can also descale appliances like kettles and dishwashers. Just Descaler notes it is effective at dissolving mineral buildup while being environmentally friendly and not overly abrasive. The company stated: "By using vinegar as a descaler, you can restore the efficiency of your appliances, like coffee makers, kettles, dishwashers, and washing machines, without resorting to harsh chemical cleaners." It added that vinegar is safe around children and pets.
