I ditched fabric conditioner for a month - here's what happened

After a month without fabric conditioner, towels absorbed water better, workout gear stayed fresher, and laundry smelled clean without heavy perfume. The experiment revealed that fabric softener may not be as essential as many households assume.

Initial adjustments and surprising results

It felt peculiar not to add fabric softener to the dispenser drawer during the initial few washes, and the change in scent was immediately apparent, yet it appeared to have no adverse effect on the laundry itself. T-shirts and leggings emerged perfectly normal after drying, while bedding actually felt somewhat softer once it had dried out.

Towels and workout gear showed the biggest improvements

The most striking revelations came when using my bath towels. After four washes without fabric conditioner, they genuinely appeared to absorb water far more efficiently. Straight from the cupboard, they weren't quite as fluffy, but they dried the skin considerably more quickly. Workout gear also benefited from the trial, with workout clothes appearing to retain their freshness even after use.

Scent and savings

At first, I assumed I would miss the lingering fragrance that fabric conditioner leaves behind. However, I soon grew accustomed to laundry that smelt clean rather than heavily perfumed. While forgoing the product only saves a modest sum per wash, those savings accumulate over time. Households carrying out several loads each week could noticeably reduce their food shop bill by cutting out this one item.

Expert advice and final verdict

Experts at Persil suggest using fabric conditioners every other wash for hand towels, bath towels, microfibre cloths, and tea towels. They also noted that fabric conditioners can be beneficial for those with sensitive skin, as they help reduce the likelihood that materials will feel rough or scratchy.

After a full month of washing without fabric conditioner, I found there were very few drawbacks. Although certain garments felt marginally less soft, towels and sportswear performed better without it. My washing machine also remained in excellent condition, with no residue building up in the detergent drawer.
