Alison Hammond has shared an update from a hospital bed after being rushed off air on This Morning while clutching at her chest. The presenter, 51, told fans on Instagram that doctors were checking her heart and she hoped it was just a panic attack.
Previous Health Battles
Hammond has been open about her health in the past. In 2020, she was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. She said the diagnosis, combined with her mother's death from cancer the same year, pushed her to take better care of herself.
Speaking to Women's Health, she said: "My mum had Type 2 diabetes and she was worried for me, so when I then found out that I was pre-diabetic, that was frightening. I thought, 'I have to be an adult about this'. The sweets had to stop, and the fatty foods."
Fitness and Osteoporosis
Hammond has also spoken about working with a personal trainer. She told Radio Times she was "not getting any younger" and realised: "At some point, you've got to look after yourself."
Her weight training and low-impact movement have helped her manage osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones. In an interview with The Times, she explained: "If I’m not filming, the first thing I do — usually several hours before Aidan wakes up — is go to the gym, where I’ll do some heavy lifting. I’ve been doing weights for ten years now and I can deadlift 65kg. It’s good for my mental health and to prevent osteoporosis. You’ve got to keep on top of things."
Weight Loss Journey
In 2007, Hammond had a gastric band fitted after reaching 28 stone, but her body rejected the device and it was removed less than three years later. She has since lost between 11 and 13.5 stone through a moderated diet, her personal trainer, and exercises like boxing and Pilates.
She has not used weight loss injections but said she doesn't think they should be as taboo as they currently are. She explained: "For me, as soon as I hear any scare story, I get frightened. So I haven't wanted to use them. What does it matter how people lose weight? Would you rather me die from being obese? If you want the jabs, if you want to go do gastric surgery, do it. Ultimately, we should want people to live longer."
Hospital Update
After the This Morning incident, Hammond posted on Instagram: "Hello, my lovelies, I know you're all worried about me. Honestly, I am fine. I'm getting my old ticker checked out. I had a bit of a palpitation and now I'm getting it all checked out. I'm hoping it was a little panic attack. I love you all, I'm so sorry I left you, I would never normally leave a TV show. The doctors are checking me out and hopefully everything is fine. Everything is fine. I’m rocking it. Look how good I look – still got my make-up on from this morning. Lush."
