How to Wash an Electric Blanket: Expert Tips and Key Step

Experts have shared their top tips on how to wash and dry an electric blanket safely, with one crucial step highlighted above all others: always check the manufacturer's care label before cleaning.

Electric blankets are a popular way to stay warm during winter without relying heavily on central heating. However, improper cleaning can damage the internal wiring, so it is essential to follow the right approach.

The Vital First Step: Check the Label

Before reaching for the washing machine, experts advise examining the care label carefully. Sophie Lane, product training manager at Miele, explained: "Firstly, before washing an electric blanket, always check the manufacturer's care instructions. Some electric blankets are machine washable, while others may only be suitable for spot cleaning. It's also important to check whether the electrical controller and cable can be completely disconnected before washing."

This step is critical to avoid ruining the blanket just as the colder months set in.

Machine Washing Your Electric Blanket

If the blanket is suitable for machine washing, it must be done correctly to prevent damage. Ada Lo, marketing manager at Dreamland, said: "As long as your electric blanket has a detachable control, it can go in the washing machine. Just use a 30°C delicate cycle and a mild detergent."

She added: "Always disconnect the power cord before washing and never submerge electrical components." It is also essential to avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh chemicals, as these can deteriorate the insulation on the wiring.

Spot Cleaning and Drying

For minor stains, spot cleaning is a good alternative. Sophie recommended using dish soap, while Heather Nixon, sustainability manager at Bio-D, suggested a natural option: "When it comes to getting stains out of electric blankets, I recommend using lemons. They are nature's very own stain remover, and using a little of its juice and salt can be a simple, low-cost way to tackle stubborn marks."

After washing, drying is crucial. Ada advised: "Air drying flat, away from direct sunlight, prevents wiring damage and keeps your blanket soft." Once completely dry, Catherine Green, a sustainable cleaning expert at smol, said: "Reconnect the cords and controllers, following the manufacturer's instructions. Test the blanket to ensure it functions correctly before use - if the shape has been changed or the wiring damaged, a more gentler hand wash may correct things."
