How to Wash an Electric Blanket: Check Label First

Experts agree that the most important step before washing an electric blanket is to check the manufacturer's care label. Some blankets are machine washable, while others may only be suitable for spot cleaning. It is also essential to verify whether the electrical controller and cable can be completely disconnected before washing.

Check the Label Before You Wash

Sophie Lane, product training manager at Miele, advised: "Firstly, before washing an electric blanket, always check the manufacturer's care instructions. Some electric blankets are machine washable, while others may only be suitable for spot cleaning. It's also important to check whether the electrical controller and cable can be completely disconnected before washing."

Ignoring this step could damage the blanket just when you need it most during the colder months.

Machine Washing Guidelines

If the blanket can be machine washed, it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the wires. Ada Lo, marketing manager at Dreamland, said: "As long as your electric blanket has a detachable control, it can go in the washing machine. Just use a 30°C delicate cycle and a mild detergent. Always disconnect the power cord before washing and never submerge electrical components."

Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and harsh chemicals, as these can break down the insulation on the wires, making the blanket unsafe to use.

Spot Cleaning Stains

For small stains, spot cleaning is a good alternative. Sophie recommended using dish soap. Heather Nixon, sustainability manager at Bio-D, suggested a natural method: "When it comes to getting stains out of electric blankets, I recommend using lemons. They are nature’s very own stain remover, and using a little of its juice and salt can be a simple, low-cost way to tackle stubborn marks. The citric acid in lemon juice can help break down marks and discolouration, while the salt acts as a gentle abrasive to help lift them from the fabric."

Drying and Testing

Drying is the final step, and again, checking labels is key before using a tumble dryer. Ada advised: "Air drying flat, away from direct sunlight, prevents wiring damage and keeps your blanket soft. Even luxury faux fur heated throws can be machine washed and tumble dried on low. Cosy doesn’t have to mean high-maintenance."

Once completely dry, reconnect the cords and controllers following the manufacturer's instructions. Catherine Green, a sustainable cleaning expert at smol, said: "Once the blanket is completely dry, reconnect the cords and controllers, following the manufacturer's instructions. Test the blanket to ensure it functions correctly before use - if the shape has been changed or the wiring damaged, a more gentler hand wash may correct things."
