Strangers' Kindness: 50 Tales of Selflessness in 2025

Throughout 2025, Guardian Australia has collected and published stories of kindness from strangers, with over 50 interviews conducted. One such story came from Debbie, who recalled a difficult day when her sick toddler vomited in a shopping mall. A stranger grabbed paper towels from a chemist display, cleaned the mess, and insisted on paying for the towels.

Other acts ranged from small gestures to life-changing interventions, such as helping someone secure a place in rehab. Many recipients remembered these events in vivid detail decades later, like a woman in her 70s who described the surfer who saved her from drowning as a teenager, or a man who recalled encouraging words from a classmate during his first university year.

Common themes emerged: kindness often occurred on otherwise awful days, and many acts were quiet and unseen. Some stories involved people taking risks, such as accepting a ride or accommodation from a stranger, only to be met with generosity. Others saw initial fears—like those of intimidating youths or bikers—dispelled by their willingness to help.

Debbie summed up her experience: “It still reminds me that there are good people out there who will drop what they’re doing and help you out, if they have the opportunity to.” The series highlighted that while evil exists, the instinctual human reaction in both exceptional and everyday situations is often selflessness.
