Avocados are a delicious and nutritious fruit that can be enjoyed in many different ways, but if you want to make them taste even better, Gordon Ramsay swears by one simple ingredient.
The Secret Ingredient: Lime
Packed with healthy fats, avocados can be a wonderfully nutritious addition to any meal. Whether blended into smoothies, stirred through scrambled eggs, or simply spread on toast, this soft, creamy fruit delivers great taste in virtually any form: blended, blitzed, or smashed. However, on their own, avocados can sometimes taste a little underwhelming. Fortunately, there is one straightforward addition that can dramatically boost the flavour — and none other than Gordon Ramsay swears by it.
In a Facebook video, the culinary legend revealed his top tip for cooking with avocados. The secret weapon in question is lime. In the clip, the celebrated chef squeezes the juice of half a lime directly onto half an avocado, rubbing it in with his fingers before slicing it up.
Why Lime Works
The sharpness of the lime perfectly offsets the rich, buttery creaminess of the avocado, creating a far more balanced flavour. It can also lighten the texture slightly, making it considerably easier to spread onto toast. Cookery expert Jan Valdez at food website The Kitchn also champions the idea of squeezing lime over avocados. She said: "This might be a hot take, but lime juice is a must for avocado toast. The acidity of fresh lime juice balances out the richness of the avocado. A squeeze of lime brightens it up a bit and rounds out the flavour. Lemon works too, but lime is better in my opinion."
Additional Benefits
Beyond enhancing the taste, adding lime to avocado brings another brilliant benefit. As lime juice is packed with citric acid, this powerful antioxidant helps slow down the oxidation process that causes the avocado's flesh to turn brown. The result is that your avocado stays fresher and greener for considerably longer. So, if you would rather not eat it all in one sitting, you can easily pop the remainder in the fridge without worrying about it discolouring.
Recipe developer and dietitian Jeanette took to her website, The Radiant Root, to sing the praises of using lime juice on avocados. She said: "The juice of lime is a necessary ingredient. It adds a bright citrusy taste and also enhances the flavour of the avocados. Thanks to the acidity in lime juice, you can also prevent a brown avocado from forming after guacamole is exposed to air."
