Former This Morning presenter Fern Britton has unveiled the three key strategies behind her remarkable five-stone weight loss, putting years of dieting struggles firmly behind her.
The Turning Point: A Decision to Reclaim Health
The 68-year-old television star, who has openly discussed a lifelong battle with her weight, fluctuating between a size 22 and a size 12, decided to take decisive action following shoulder surgery a couple of years ago. Reflecting on her health, Fern made a firm commitment to change. She resolved to stop smoking, quit drinking, get her eating under control, and break the cycle of lying in bed feeling sorry for herself.
This resolution coincided with a major lifestyle shift, having left her decades-long role on This Morning and embracing a slower-paced life in Cornwall. It was here she began her transformative journey.
The Three Pillars of Fern's New Regime
Fern's impressive transformation rests on three fundamental pillars: consistent exercise, dietary mindfulness, and strength training.
Her fitness journey began with the NHS-backed Couch to 5K programme, an app designed to gently introduce running. By September of last year, her dedication paid off spectacularly when she announced to her social media followers that she had run for 40 minutes straight, covering an impressive 6.5 kilometres.
Alongside running, Fern is a passionate cyclist, having enjoyed a cycling holiday in Italy last October, and she is dedicated to walking. Crucially, she also incorporated strength training into her routine. She has shared selfies from her home gym, lifting dumbbells and weight bars, focusing on rebuilding strength lost after a serious bout of sepsis following a hysterectomy in 2016.
The third secret lies in her diet. Fern told Woman&Home magazine that she started consciously thinking about her food intake for the first time. A major step was cutting out 80% of her sugar consumption. She emphasises eating three sensible meals a day to properly fuel her active lifestyle.
Dispelling Rumours and Embracing a New Chapter
Fern's dramatic change sparked rumours about the use of weight-loss medications like Ozempic. However, she has been unequivocal in setting the record straight. "People often wonder when you've lost lots of weight whether you've done it naturally," she said. "And I can look at you and say, 'Yes, I have.'"
Now residing permanently in her renovated Cornish home, Fern has channelled her energy into writing, having published her 11th novel, A Cornish Legacy, in May 2025. Fans have been quick to praise her age-defying appearance, with many commenting on her social media posts about her incredible transformation.
From overcoming a near-fatal health scare to finding a balanced, active life in Cornwall, Fern Britton's story is a powerful testament to reclaiming health through sustainable, natural methods later in life.
