Skirting boards tend to attract dust and debris, but there is an easy method to keep them clean for weeks using an item most people already have at home. Dust often gathers in unnoticed spots until guests arrive and you see the grimy film on skirting boards, making the home look neglected. This is especially common in late spring during pollen season, when opening windows briefly can require a thorough clean.
Why Skirting Boards Get Dusty Quickly
Skirting boards are prone to getting grubby because they are typically painted with a gloss finish that generates static electricity, drawing in nearby debris and fluff. This means they can look filthy again within days, no matter how often you wipe them down. The tiny grooves in the wood trap even more dirt.
The Solution: Dryer Sheets
Home organizing expert Caroline Solomon, known online as Neat Caroline, has revealed a low-effort method to repel dust. All you need are tumble dryer sheets. Caroline said: "If your baseboards are super dusty, I recommend using a dryer sheet to get rid of extra dust. I just grab a dryer sheet and run it along the baseboard. The dryer sheet will leave a thin residue on the baseboard that will also prevent future dust."
Dryer sheets are designed to neutralize static in laundry, stopping clothes from clumping together. The same principle applies to the static electricity on skirting boards, helping to keep them cleaner for longer. When you wipe skirting boards with dryer sheets, a small amount of fabric softening compounds is left behind, which stops dust from adhering to the surface. It also creates a smoother finish, meaning grime struggles to grip the wood, so other debris takes longer to settle.
How to Use Dryer Sheets to Keep Dust Away
Start by cleaning your skirting boards as you normally would, removing any accumulated dust. Use a bucket of soapy water—you can add a few drops of white vinegar to break down dust quickly. Make sure to vacuum the floor as well, ensuring the room is free of loose dust. Thoroughly dry the skirting boards, then take a dryer sheet and gently run it across the surface. There is no need to scrub; this cleaning hack works with just a light wipe.
Dryer sheets can slow down how quickly dust clings to surfaces for a couple of weeks, though this depends on how busy and dusty the room tends to be. Dust accumulates more rapidly if you frequently open windows, dry laundry indoors, or have carpets and rugs in the room. It will also build up quickly if surfaces are left slightly damp after being sprayed or polished.
