Dr Amir Khan, the ITV doctor known for his medical insights, has shared his five 'pillars of health' that could help increase your lifespan. In a recent episode of his podcast No Appointment Necessary, shared on Instagram, Dr Khan emphasised that these lifestyle changes do not require significant time or money.
The Five Pillars of Health
During the podcast, co-host Cherry Healey asked: 'What can we actually do to increase our lifespan in a healthy way?' Dr Khan acknowledged that many wellness podcasts cater to a privileged demographic with ample time, money, and freedom. He stressed that his advice is for everyone, regardless of circumstances.
Dr Khan outlined five key pillars:
- Stop smoking – He described smoking as the worst thing for health, as it hardens arteries and raises blood pressure.
- Cut back on alcohol – While no level of alcohol is completely safe, he advised drinking within recommended limits.
- Eat healthy food and move more – A balanced diet and regular physical activity are essential.
- Get good quality sleep – Prioritising rest is crucial for overall health.
- Reduce stress and stay socially connected – Managing stress and maintaining positive relationships are vital.
Practical Advice for Everyone
Dr Khan noted that these pillars are often referred to as 'lifestyle choices' but are foundational to good health. In the video caption, he added: 'You don’t need perfection, money, or a wellness retreat to improve your health. Quit smoking, drink less, move more, sleep better, manage stress, and stay connected to people. The basics still matter most.'
This straightforward approach aims to make healthy living accessible to all, reinforcing that small, consistent changes can have a significant impact on longevity.
