A teenager from Ohio, US, has shared her horrifying experience after suffering a severe allergic reaction to eyelash extensions, which left her housebound for five weeks and fearing she might go blind.
Haley Fetzer, 17, initially had a successful lash extension treatment before her prom. Two weeks later, she booked an infill appointment. Within hours, her eyes became bloodshot and began secreting a thick, orange mucus. The next morning, she woke up unable to open her eyes, which remained sealed shut for four days due to swelling.
Fetzer visited her lash technician to have the extensions removed, describing the process as 'getting bitten by a million ants.' Her GP prescribed a five-week course of eye drops, but her eyes remained bloodshot during recovery, forcing her to stay indoors out of embarrassment. 'I felt that I looked like a scary zombie and if I went out I'd scare little kids,' she said.
Fetzer initially dismissed her mild reaction after the first treatment as hay fever, as she lives in the countryside. However, the second treatment triggered a much more severe response. She has vowed never to get the treatment again, warning others to be cautious about potential allergic reactions to lash adhesives.
