Dermatologist Dr Samantha Ellis is urging women to avoid a common eyelash mistake that she says can 'instantly age' them, leaving them looking tired and making dark circles more obvious.
In a video shared online, Dr Ellis explained that many patients visit her clinic asking which cosmetic 'interventions' she would recommend based on their appearance. She said she assesses patients' teeth, eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair colour, insisting it is 'all a picture and to get the best result, the interventions must all be comprehensive.'
A Common Cosmetic Mistake
Dr Ellis revealed that the thing people 'mess up the most is their eyelashes,' and pleaded with them to stop opting for 'thick, heavy, dense, super long' eyelashes. She described the change as an 'easy cosmetic fix' at 'zero cost to you,' and clarified she was not trying to be 'mean,' but added that sometimes if you don't 'want to hear it, you need to hear it.'
She captioned the video: "Truly sharing this with love. Sometimes we get so used to certain cosmetic things on our face that we stop seeing them the way other people do. And sometimes, a little switch-up can make all the difference!"
Why Thick Lashes Are Problematic
Dr Ellis outlined three reasons for her objection. First, she said such lashes can give the appearance of 'two sleepy eyes' because they are heavy and eyelid muscles are not very strong, leaving eyes 'kinda half open, half shut.'
Second, she pointed out that dense, long lashes can make dark circles worse by 'creating a shadow on your under-eye.' Third, she said these lashes can 'look out of place,' noting that if nothing else on the face is 'big and bold,' such lashes 'disrupt the harmony.'
Dr Ellis stressed that she does not consider 'all fake lashes are bad,' acknowledging that some are 'beautiful and natural' and 'complement the rest of your features.' However, she suggested many people are 'walking around out there with eyelash blindness,' urging them to 'take a look in the mirror.'
