A viral TikTok trend called 'skin flooding' – where users layer multiple hydrating products in quick succession – is facing criticism from skincare experts. Dr Emma Wedgeworth, a consultant dermatologist, warns this well-intentioned routine could actually damage your skin barrier.
The Problem With Over-Hydration
"While hydration is crucial, drowning your skin in serums and creams disrupts its natural balance," explains Dr Wedgeworth. "The skin's barrier function can become overwhelmed, leading to increased sensitivity and even breakouts."
The trend typically involves applying hyaluronic acid followed by multiple moisturisers within minutes. Many users report immediate plumping effects, but dermatologists caution about long-term consequences.
Signs You're Overdoing It
- Unusual redness or irritation
- Sudden appearance of small bumps
- Skin that feels tight yet looks oily
- Products 'sitting' on skin rather than absorbing
A Smarter Approach to Hydration
Instead of flooding, Dr Wedgeworth recommends:
- Choose one effective hydrating serum
- Allow 60 seconds between layers
- Finish with an appropriate moisturiser
- Adjust routine seasonally
"Great skincare isn't about quantity," she emphasises. "It's about using the right products for your skin type at the right time."
