A retired chef from County Durham and his daughter have lost almost 9st between them after deciding to improve their health. Robert Morris, 74, joined a Slimming World group run by his daughter Amanda Stewart, who has herself lost over 6st.

From convenience foods to healthier choices

Robert, who previously lived on convenience foods such as pies, pasties and chippy teas, said he became tired of trying to "hide" his figure. His desire to "get into a suit" for his daughter's wedding and improve his health inspired him to make a change.

He started his weight loss journey because he "wanted to be able to get into a suit that made [him] presentable" ahead of the wedding in April last year. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he also wanted to improve his health.

First week success and diabetes management

In his first week alone, Robert lost 3lb, which gave him early encouragement to continue. He said one of the biggest improvements has been in his general health and diabetes management, alongside steady weight loss.

"I've made much healthier choices and cut down on processed foods," he said. "My daughter is the consultant and her views and enthusiasm helped me enormously. Amanda has lost over 6st herself and changed her life forever."

Overcoming challenges and feeling better

Robert admits that sweet foods have been his biggest challenge, but says improved habits and support from the group have helped him stay on track. He now reports feeling healthier, more mobile, and more confident in managing his diabetes, alongside noticing everyday improvements in his energy and wellbeing.

"I'm not hiding my size anymore," he said. "I also feel better in myself and that's the most important thing."

Amanda, who is now using her weight loss to inspire others, said: "Seeing my dad improve his health, manage his diabetes better and take control of his wellbeing has been incredible. He is proof that making small, consistent changes can have a huge impact on long-term health. I couldn't be prouder of him."
