Dad loses 4 stone after stepdad's cardiac arrest

James Shadbolt, 40, from Poole, was inspired to transform his health after his stepdad Kevin suffered a cardiac arrest in December 2023. The chef and father of four performed CPR on Kevin, who made a full recovery. The scare prompted James to lose nearly 4 stone (25kg) in six months.

Health scare sparks change

James said: 'My initial reaction was panic... The whole thing is still a blur. I don't remember having time to think about what was happening or what the outcome might be.' He added: 'Thankfully, Kevin made a full recovery, but the experience stayed with me and forced me to think seriously about my own health.'

He realised neglecting his health could affect his wife Penney and children. James said: 'I made the promise to myself that I would do everything I could to avoid putting my family through something similar.'

Football league and healthier eating

James joined MAN v FAT, a football league for overweight men, and listened to fitness coach Eric Roberts' podcasts. He began weighing portions and tracking calories, but still enjoyed burgers and pizzas in moderation.

He said: 'It helped me understand how much I was actually eating and where I could make better choices. The biggest change was learning I didn't need to be perfect.'

Strength training and results

After significant weight loss, James started strength training through Eric Roberts' coaching programme. In six months, he lost over 25kg, and now feels 'fitter and stronger than since his early twenties'. His resting heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol improved.

James said: 'Now I can run around, play football, go on bike rides and be properly involved instead of watching from the side. The biggest achievement isn't any particular exercise, though. It's having the freedom and confidence to take part in an active family life without my health holding me back.'

Campaign highlights men's health neglect

James shared his story for Benenden Health's campaign 'The Wake-Up Call'. Research among 2,000 UK men aged 35-55 found 62% have ignored symptoms or health concerns, while 76% prioritise the health of loved ones over their own.
